What is an AED and why do you need it?
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.
AEDs were developed to enable non-medical personnel to administer life-saving electrical shocks to the heart of a person experiencing a heart attack.
Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) shows that Ischaemic Heart Disease is still the number one cause of death in the Philippines in both sexes. From January to August of 2022 About 67,601 cases or 18.4 percent of the total deaths in the country making it the top killer disease among Filipino men and women.
CPR and use of an AED can double or triple the victim's chance of survival.
CPR or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is an emergency procedure performed when the heart stops beating. This procedure keeps oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and heart until a defibrillator or emergency team arrives to get the heart beating normally. When started immediately following cardiac arrest, CPR and use of an AED can double or triple the victim's chance of survival.
